Sarah Damm shares 12 Scripture verses that will bring new life to our hearts throughout the entire season.
Growing up in South Florida, I longed to experience the natural shifts that came with the four seasons: colorful falls, snowy winters, blooming springs, breezy summers. When I moved to the upper Midwest, I finally got my wish, but in quite an unbalanced way. Winters here are so long, and spring is rushed too quickly into hot summers. And when spring does show up, it is often followed by an April snow.
Because of this, I have never liked spring.
But over the last few years, my appreciation for spring has grown. Even though spring is very short in Minnesota, when the sun warms the earth, the trees turn the most vibrant green, and bulbs display their flowering blossoms, it is a living miracle, a smile from God that promises new life, spiritual growth, and renewal of mind and heart.
Nature Mirrors the Liturgical
Spring’s natural imagery also mirrors the liturgical season of Easter. Nature reflects the Paschal Mystery — Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection — as we witness the barren landscape returning to life. Spiritually, humanity journeys through the desert with Jesus during Lent to finally receive His promise of eternal life on Easter Sunday.
I think it is so lovely to consider how Jesus brought about our redemption — our new life — in a garden, where His tomb resided (see John 19:41 and John 20:15). In my holy imagination, I imagine that garden to be stemming with new life, too, in the context of spring flowers, lush trees, sweet aromas, and vibrant colors. Can you just picture it?
Yes, spring is a beautiful time of year to continue the work of Lent through prayer, journaling, and spiritual reading. With the joy of Easter brimming in our hearts and reflected in nature, we can grow in our prayer life and our relationship with the Lord.
Pray with Scripture This Spring
One way to enter into the season of spring and all that it promises is through praying with Scripture, or lectio divina. Through the Word of God, we can be renewed, refreshed, and restored, as we dare to hope for new life to spring forth in our own hearts.
Below are twelve Bible verses to pray this spring.
God Brings New Life
“See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19a)
“We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4)
“So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
“The one who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ Then he said, ‘Write these words down, for they are trustworthy and true.’” (Revelation 21:5)
God Promises Growth
“For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the turtledove is heard in our land.” (Song of Songs 2:11-12)
“As the earth brings forth its shoots, and a garden makes its seeds spring up, So will the Lord God make justice spring up, and praise before all the nations.” (Isaiah 61:11)
“Let us know, let us strive to know the Lord; as certain as the dawn is his coming. He will come to us like the rain, like spring rain that waters the earth.” (Hosea 6:3)
“Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them.” (Luke 12:27)
God Renews and Restores
“In green pastures he makes me lie down; to still waters he leads me; he restores my soul. He guides me along right paths for the sake of his name.” (Psalm 23:2-3)
“Send forth your spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth.” (Psalm 104:30)
“They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on eagles’ wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
“Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
Go Deeper with Bible Journaling
After some time praying with these springtime Scripture verses, consider journaling the answers to the following reflection questions:
- What areas in your life need renewal?
- How have you experienced new life in Jesus, in the past or in the present?
- How does remembering that experience give you hope that God keeps His promises and will renew your mind and heart once again?
