Elaine Sinnott shares encouraging words for moms who feel they cannot find the quiet time to be with God.

Losing My Morning Prayer Time

Newly pregnant for the first time in three years, the longest gap I had ever experienced with my previous seven children, I was driving in the car to pick a child up from an activity while I pondered the new life inside me.

I have a great tendency to worry about the things ahead, even though it clearly says “do not be afraid” 365 times in the Bible. I also hear the words of the world echoing in my mind, concerned about what others will think, rather than raising my eyes to my Father in Heaven and seeing how much He has blessed me in my life.

Anyone else relate?

One of the first things I thought about as I drove over the snow-covered roads was when the baby would be here, how would I go through another season of losing my early quiet prayer time in the morning? I had established a wonderful morning prayer routine for the first time, and I was saddened by the thought of not having quiet time with God by myself anymore for another couple years.

This thought did not have much time to weigh on me, though, because it was quickly interrupted with the words, “As you are caring for this baby, you will be worshipping Me.”

The Holy Spirit was very quick to correct and console me so I wouldn’t dwell on a stressful, false assumption but rather ponder on the good and beautiful Truth.

Motherhood: a Visible Sign of Worship of God

Carrying this child in my womb and later holding this child in my arms — it is a visible cooperation in the life-giving work of God — it is an icon of the Blessed Trinity. The Father and Son have such great love for each other that the Holy Spirit is this love, this Third Person of the Trinity. Just as husband and wife love each other so much, their love sometimes turns into a third person: a child. What greater love and worship of God is there than the visible image of the Blessed Trinity?

Maternal care is a great form of obedience and worship to the Lord because mothers are stewards of souls.

In The Flame of Love: The Spiritual Diary of Elizabeth Kindelmann, we read a beautiful message Jesus shared with her about mothers:

Today Jesus said, "I speak to all mothers. Your work is very important. You are called to populate my Kingdom and to fill the places of the fallen angels. All progress in my Church begins in your wombs. You have the greatest work that requires the greatest responsibility.” (p. 77)

What incredible encouragement!

The Holy Spirit, our beloved Friend, reminded me in that car drive that those quiet morning hours I have now of coffee and no interruptions which will turn into busier morning hours of feedings, diaper changes, and rocking back and forth —— it’s all the same in Jesus’ eyes.

Both are great acts of love and sacrifice which give Him great glory and aid in the progress of His Church.

Be Encouraged, Dear Friend!

Do not be discouraged if you are in a season which leaves so little prayer time because you are spending so much time and energy caring for young ones.

Lift your eyes in those moments of loneliness, redundancy, and overwhelm, and know how much Our Lord appreciates and loves all you are doing for Him and His Beloved Bride, His Church.
