Laura Range reviews the popular Catholic liturgical living subscription box as well as new Lenten products for the whole family.

In our family, the only thing more exciting than getting a letter in the mail … is getting a package! When the cheerfully decorated box from Catholic Family Crate arrived, I was deep into a first trimester full of morning sickness. Winter was feeling long. The Catholic Family Crate subscription box was a perfect ray of sunshine for our family: an opportunity to learn about our Catholic Faith and do fun activities together that took zero preparation for a tired mama!

Started by a Catholic mom who wanted to help her own family as well as other families learn more about the saints and the liturgical seasons, Catholic Family Crate is a true blessing to parents who want to teach their children but aren’t quite sure where to start — and for those of us whose strengths do not lie in the arts and crafts category! Each month’s subscription box varies with its content but generally contains resources to celebrate saint feast days of the month and liturgical seasons.

What's in the February Box?

Our February box started out with the feast day of Saint José Sánchez del Río, a 14-year-old Mexican martyr from the 1920s. My children were able to do a sticker scene of one of his heroic moments while I read the biography of the saint to them (included on the back of the art print of the saint! See, I told you: no prep!). For Saint Valentine’s Day, our box also contained saint valentines for the kids to address to friends and family as well as a Catholic symbols Bingo game, with reusable cards and enough for 24 people to play.

In addition to the feast-day festivities, the crates contain a “table topper” with a virtue, discussion questions, and a memory verse that you can use during mealtimes. Don’t forget to have a dance party with their Spotify playlist!

Other Lenten Products from Catholic Family Crate

While the subscription box remains one of their most well-known items, Catholic Family Crate also offers a wealth of other Catholic educational resources, games, party products, art and stickers, journaling items (daily examen notepad:  genius!), and even some adorable tote bags. You can peruse their website by category or by liturgical season! In addition to the subscription box, we tried a few of their Lenten products to share with you!

Lenten Calendar

My Lenten Journey Lenten Calendar. This item includes a countdown poster and stickers. My kids are all about countdowns, whether for birthdays, vacations, or liturgical seasons. This one is a simple but sweet poster showing the days of Advent as a journey. Kids can place a colorful sticker on each step of the way, with graphics showing the days of abstinence from meat, Sunday Mass, and the Triduum. We did one for Advent and my children really enjoyed taking turns marking each day to Christmas. I gave them a sneak preview of this one and they are excited.

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross Card Ring. This is a brilliant, compact, and portable way to pray the Stations of the Cross with children. Kept tidily on a ring for kids to look through or adults to lead in prayer, each card has an illustration of the Station on the front and a reflection and prayer on the back. The reflections are short enough for younger attention spans but not too childish for older children. The prayers are beautiful and heartfelt (for the 6th Station of Veronica and her veil: “Jesus, wipe my soul clean and imprint your image there. Have mercy on me. I love you, and I adore you.”) Scripture verses are included for further learning about each station and its Biblical roots.

This would be useful not only for your individual family, but also for a catechism class at church or perhaps for a gathering of families to meet at a Church to walk the stations. I plan to use them for my family’s “tea light Stations,” where we set up a tea light for each station, walk to it and pray the station, then let a child blow out the candle before proceeding to the next one.

For Holy Week

Pray by Sticker: The Story of the Cross. I have a very artsy daughter (age 8) and a son (age 6) who is a whiz with numbers. Both of them loved this book. It contains 10 different pictures in a paint by number style, but instead of painting, you use the coordinating numbered stickers in the back of the book to create a gorgeous mosaic. On the opposite side of each picture is a scriptural passage describing the picture, essentially taking your children through the story of Jesus’ Passion, death, and Resurrection as they create these stunning masterpieces.

This is great for fidgety kids who need some quiet time as well as improving hand-eye coordination, but also for older children to do independently and proudly. My 4.5-year-old son tried it out too, and once he was shown how to do it, he was able to get the hang of it and did a great job (the book is recommended for age 5+).

I am impressed with the authenticity and sincerity of this company. Their products contain truly beautiful artwork, effective evangelization, are creative and joyful, and also are just plain fun (a “Sin Squash” card game played like SlapJack?!).
