Michelle Nott reviews a new self-help book written from a Catholic perspective by Sterling Jaquith.

As a mom of five young kids, you better believe I am stressed. Which is why I am so happy to be reading and reviewing Catholic Mom Calm: Six Steps to Calm the Chaos of Everyday Life by Sterling Jaquith.

In her book, Sterling explains why we feel the way that we do. She shares the science behind our brain and processing in a way that anyone can understand. She also explains how it can lead to certain reactions in stressful circumstances, all while tying it to our faith. She gives the reader tools to help work through her reactions and creates space for notes in the book.

Sterling not only explains the science behind our emotions and reactions to stress, but also gives us techniques that we can use to help change our negative thoughts to positive ones.

This is a book that you want to take your time with. I am in the middle of reading/completing it myself and did not want to rush through it because I want to practice the techniques that she teaches. Changing our mindset is possible but also takes time and work. She designed this book to be a 6-week study for moms to help create calm in their lives that many crave.

As I am going through this study, I really appreciate the notes sections and questions with spaces to answer in the book itself; it makes it easier to complete the questions and not worry about grabbing an extra notebook.

As a mom who struggles with mental health, I also appreciate seeing a Catholic book that addresses the stressful circumstances that moms go through. This is a self-help book that has a Catholic element to it. Mental health is not always addressed in the Church, and this book will help a lot of moms feel seen and welcome in their faith despite their struggles. It will give them hope that life can change and doesn’t have to be as chaotic.

Each new section begins with a quote from a saint and a prayer to help gather our thoughts and put our mind in the right place to learn and understand what we are about to read.

I am enjoying reading Catholic Mom Calm and working through stressful situations that pop up in my life so that I can better receive them with grace and patience. If you are also a busy mom that is stressed and can use some help to remain calm during stressful situations, I encourage you to give this book a try!
