Deanna Bartalini was reminded about a few things herself when she read Tomie dePaola's children’s book Christopher, The Holy Giant.

The children’s book author and illustrator Tomie DePaola has been a longtime family favorite. Many of his books are on my shelves, saved from when my children were young, and now I read them to my grandchildren! One of my grandsons is named Christopher. Of course, I wanted to review this book: Christopher, The Holy Giant.

Christopher the Holy Giant

I had never heard this legend about Christopher and love that Tomie dePaola has told it in this book. The giant, Reprobus, goes on a quest to find the “greatest and most powerful king in all the world.” He meets different people with different answers, ultimately ending his search while in service to others. It is then that Christ reveals himself to Reprobus, henceforth known as Christopher, "Bearer of Christ."

A few things struck me as I read the story:

  • Reprobus is told by the hermit that he cannot find Christ; rather, “You must pray and Christ will find you.”
  • Service to others is an integral part of faith.
  • We are given reminders of our encounters with Christ.

The story is beautiful, and the illustrations are in the very recognizable style of Tomie dePaola, with strong lines and vibrant colors.

Christopher, The Holy Giant, published by Magnificat-Ignatius, would be wonderful to read to children as a way to begin discussing service, following Jesus, and, most importantly, who we serve in this world.

Ask for Christopher, the Holy Giant at your local Catholic bookseller, or order online from Amazon.com or the publisher, Ignatius Press.
