Desire is Fundamental (O Desejo É Fundamental)

Human beings are made up of body and soul; both are driven by desire. Desire has immense power and an overwhelming force. It is desire that drives our instincts to eat, drink, rest, and have sex. It is desire that makes us get out of bed every day to fulfill our obligations and build our lives. A lack of desire, in any area of our lives, can be a sign of illness (physical or emotional) and can even lead to death!   

Desire is like a rocket with great propulsion that can take us to great heights and immense happiness, but if it is pointed the wrong way, at ourselves, it can be the cause of our self-destruction. So the key to using desire to our advantage is to ask: What do I desire? And why do I desire it? 

There are the basic desires of our nature that are relatively easy to fulfill: eating when you're hungry, drinking when you're thirsty and resting when you're tired, among others. The problem begins when we start adding qualities to these desires, such as the type of food or drink, or the place or amount of rest. We can desire more difficult material things, such as a house, a car, a trip. Desires can be more complex and broader, such as the desire for power, for a social position, for fame and wealth.  

When we analyze our own lives and the society in which we live, we can conclude that it is very difficult to reach the point of having all our desires fulfilled. Every time we get something we want, we start wanting something else ... and what is the root of this? Why do we always seem dissatisfied?  

St. Augustine already said: "My heart is restless until it rests in you, my God." With material things it is relatively easy to satisfy the desires of our body, but as we are body and soul, there is something in us, a kind of desire, that will never be satisfied while we are in this earthly life. It is our desire for the infinite. Our bodies will come to an end when we die, but our souls are immortal and cannot be entirely satisfied with the things of this world. 

God put this kind of insatiable desire in our souls for one reason: to remind us that we were made for eternity! And if we were made for eternity, we should, from now on, live in such a way that we can be eternally happy and fulfilled. That's why the most important thing we can do in this life is to desire for Heaven. 

The desire for heaven has incredible power. It moves us to always choose what will help us achieve this goal; to seek to live a life of virtue, always looking for the good, the beautiful and the true. It's very important to renew this desire often. To really say in our minds: I want to go to heaven! I want to be eternally happy in God, who created me for this! 

It is the desire for Heaven that moved the lives of so many saints, giving them the strength and joy to face the greatest sufferings, including martyrdom. We know that the closest we can get to heaven in this life is to receive Jesus, with his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist. In the book The Imitation of Christ, Thomas à Kempis prays:

With the utmost devotion and ardent love, with all the affection and fervor of my heart, I desire to receive you Lord in Holy Communion, as many saints and devout people who were so dear to you desired (...) O eternal love, my only good, unending happiness, I desire to receive you with the most vehement fervor and with the most dignified reverence that any of your saints ever had or ever can feel. And even though I am unworthy of having those admirable feelings of love, I offer you all the affection of my heart, as if I alone were animated by all those inflamed desires. 

So let's analyze our own lives and try to see how we can better direct our "rocket" of desire toward what really matters: Heaven. Many things are necessary for us to be able to live a dignified life, but our desire cannot be directed toward them. They are only the means, not the end. Our goal is Heaven.

O Desejo É Fundamental 

O ser humano é composto de corpo e alma; tanto um como outro são movidos pelo desejo. O desejo tem um poder imenso e uma força avassaladora. É o desejo que move nossos instintos para comer, beber, descansar, ter relações sexuais. É o desejo que nos faz sair da cama todos os dias para cumprirmos nossas obrigações e construirmos nossa vida. A falta de desejo, em qualquer área de nossa vida, pode ser sinal de alguma doença (física ou emocional) e pode até levar a morte!   

O desejo é como um foguete com grande propulsão que pode nos levar às alturas e à imensa felicidade, mas se ele for apontado para o lado errado, para nós mesmos, pode ser causa de nossa autodestruição. Então a chave para usar o desejo a nosso favor é perguntar: o que eu desejo? E por que eu desejo isso? 

Existem os desejos básicos da nossa natureza que são relativamente fáceis de serem atendidos: comer quando se está com fome, beber quando tem sede e descansar quando está cansado, entre outros. O problema começa quando começamos a acrescentar qualidades a esses desejos, como o tipo de comida ou bebida; o lugar ou a quantidade de descanso... Podemos desejar coisas materiais mais difíceis, como uma casa, um carro, uma viagem. Os desejos podem ser mais complexos e amplos, como o desejo por poder, por uma posição social, pela fama e riqueza.  

Ao analisarmos a nossa própria vida e a sociedade em que vivemos podemos concluir que é muito difícil chegar ao ponto de ter todos os desejos atendidos. Sempre que conseguimos algo que desejávamos, começamos a desejar outra coisa... E qual é a raiz disso? Por que parecemos sempre insatisfeitos?  

Santo Agostinho já dizia: “inquieto está meu coração enquanto não repousar em Ti, meu Deus”. Com as coisas materiais é relativamente fácil saciar os desejos do nosso corpo, mas como somos corpo e alma, existe algo em nós, um tipo de desejo, que jamais será saciado enquanto estivermos nessa vida terrena. É o nosso desejo pelo infinito. O nosso corpo terá um fim, quando morrermos, mas a nossa alma é imortal e não pode ser inteiramente saciada com as coisas desse mundo.  

Deus colocou esse tipo de desejo insaciável em nossa alma por uma única razão: para lembrarmos que fomos feitos para a eternidade! E se fomos feitos para a eternidade, devemos, desde já, vivermos de uma forma que possamos ser eternamente felizes e realizados. Por isso, o mais importante que podemos fazer nessa vida é desejar o Céu. 

O desejo pelo Céu tem um poder incrível. Ele nos move a escolher sempre aquilo que vai nos ajudar nessa meta; a buscar viver uma vida de virtudes, procurando sempre o bem, o belo e o verdadeiro. É muito importante renovar esse desejo frequentemente. Dizer mesmo, em nossa mente: eu quero ir para o Céu! Eu quero ser eternamente feliz em Deus, que me criou para isso! 

É o desejo pelo Céu que moveu a vida de tantos santos, dando força e alegria para enfrentarem os maiores sofrimentos, incluindo o martírio. Sabemos que o mais perto que podemos chegar do Céu nessa vida é receber Jesus, com seu Corpo, Sangue, Alma e Divindade na Sagrada Eucaristia. No livro “Imitação de Cristo”, Tomás de Kempis reza: “Com suma devoção e abrasado amor, com todo afeto e fervor do coração, desejo receber-vos Senhor na Sagrada Comunhão, como desejaram muitos santos e pessoas devotas que vos eram tão caras (...) Oh amor eterno, meu único bem, felicidade interminável, desejo receber-vos com fervor mais veemente e com a reverência mais digna qual jamais teve nem pode sentir nenhum dos vossos santos. E ainda que eu seja indigno de ter aqueles admiráveis sentimentos de amor, ofereço-vos todo o afeto do meu coração, como se eu só estivesse animado de todos aqueles inflamados desejos.” 

Então, vamos analisar nossa própria vida e tentar enxergar como podemos direcionar melhor nosso “foguete” do desejo para aquilo que realmente importa: o Céu. Muitas coisas são necessárias para conseguirmos viver dignamente, mas nosso desejo não pode estar direcionado a elas. Elas são apenas meio, não o fim. Nossa meta é o Céu.
