Elizabeth Yank ponders every mom's need for restorative quiet time with Our Lord or the Blessed Mother.
Do I have to get out of this nice warm shower?
At least for right now, I don’t hear anyone calling, “Mommy, mommy, mommy" (or in my case, Aunt Beth, since I am the guardian of three boys). It would be so nice if I could just stay in here forever? Life would go on.
Okay. That’s not realistic. Eventually the water is going to get frigid. In my case, pretty fast.
Definitely when warm soothing water is pouring down my shoulders, I would like to wash all my problems, concerns, and worries as a wife, mother, daughter, and friend right down the drain with the soap bubbles. But I can only wish.
How often do we want to escape the pressures of life for just a few moments?
Unfortunately, that just ain’t happenin’. So what’s a mother to do?
Have a conversation with our Heavenly Father ... or maybe you feel more comfortable having a conversation with the Blessed Mother. She is our Mother. Become a little child and climb onto our Heavenly Father’s lap and talk to Him, or take the place of the child Jesus in the Blessed Mother’s arms we see in so many paintings. Tell either Him or her your worries and concerns. The hardest part is to not do all the talking. Listen to His or her answers. You know she is going to say, “Do whatever He (meaning Jesus) tells you.”
If we never have moments of utter peace and quiet (even if they are in the shower) we can never hear our Heavenly Father’s answers. Obviously, the better way to have a meaningful conversation is to get out of bed early or stay up a little later or find a time during the day at an appointed set time every day. That is the goal.
But for the days when the baby wants to nurse too many times at night or one urgent demanding situation after another used up your day until you are too exhausted to stay up a minute more, let alone even think a rational thought, sneaking in a moment of peace may be your only recourse that day.
It’s hard to believe that one day the house will be so quiet that the only noise will be the ticking of the clock. That time will come soon enough.
In the meantime, conversing with our Heavenly Father wherever and whenever you can will make it much easier to step out of a warm shower into a sometimes cold, overwhelming world.
May the Lord of Peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. (2 Thessalonians 3:16)
