Laura Range reviews 5 items from the family-owned Catholic Family Crate shop that would make great gifts for children receiving their first Communion.

Spring is here, and that means sacrament season! For Catholics, springtime not only means graduation invitations but also Confirmations, Reconciliations, and first holy Communions. If you are looking for some helpful gift ideas for any children in your life preparing for first Communion (and Confession), Catholic Family Crate has you covered. Here are five items they sell that would make a creative and helpful gift or resource for first Communicants!

Parts of the Mass Ring

By the age of first Communion, most children are familiar with the general sequence of the Mass, but they don’t always know the specific parts of the Mass and the details about what is happening. I gave this ring-bound Parts of the Mass set to my son as he prepares for his first Communion. We have been helping him participate in more than just “sitting, standing, kneeling” and encouraging him to listen and respond to the parts of the Mass. This is a great tool to assist his comprehension of the Mass and to be more engaged in it. I love how sturdy and compact it is, yet with great explanations!

Go Fishes and Loaves

This card game is a Catholic take on Go Fish, designed to help kids learn more about the Holy Eucharist while enjoying a familiar card game. The cards are illustrated with different symbols and elements of the Eucharist, such as manna, loaves and fishes, and the tabernacle. My family loves this simple card game for all ages; it has the ability to spark discussions on the gift Jesus has given us in the Blessed Sacrament.

Sin Squash

Sin Squash is a cute take on Slap Jack. As you lay down the different virtue cards in a pile in the middle, watch out for a "sin card!" The first person to slap the “sin” and squash it will win the whole pile of cards. My preschool child did think the devil on the sin cards was a little scary, but my First Communicant and his older sister enjoyed this fast, competitive game.

Confession Notepad

This Confession notepad is such a creative and useful resource for a child beginning to go to Confession — but honestly, would be great for adults too! Each of the 50 sheets contains all the steps of the sacrament of Reconciliation, from the Sign of the Cross to leaving the confessional and doing your penance. It has a place to write down your sins, how many days since your last Confession, what the priest gives you for a penance, and the Act of Contrition! No need for any pre-Confession jitters with this genius little tool.

Pray by Sticker: Catholic Kids

These Pray by Sticker books are like a paint-by-number collection, only with stickers. Great for hand-eye coordination, they are beautiful mosaic pictures when finished and my kids from ages 4-8 have enjoyed making them … even I claimed the Sacred Heart picture to do myself for some quiet craft time with them! While they have the Story of the Cross and a Christmas book, my favorite is the general Catholic Kids one, with a nice variety of 10 pictures including an intricate Saint Michael picture, a Paschal candle, and Our Lady.
