Monica Portogallo reviews a bedtime storybook that was a hit with her young toddler.

Let’s be honest: reading board books to little ones can be a bit tedious. For me, it helps when a board book has something that makes it fun to read out loud, like clever rhymes or a good cadence.

The first time I read Goodnight, Jesus, I didn’t think it was going to be one of the board books I happily read to my little one: it doesn’t rhyme, and the rhythm seemed off to me. My son enjoyed it, though, and asked me to read it again several times over the next few days. After a few readings, thankfully, I realized I was using the wrong technique.

This book’s repetitive format lends itself nicely to a sing-song style of reading it, and once I read it that way, it was much more enjoyable. I also liked that I could read the relevant Bible passages for each person or thing we said goodnight to, or skip them if my little one’s attention was short. Both my son and I appreciated the darling illustrations, as well.

So if you’re looking for a cute little bedtime book for a cute little Christian in your life, give Goodnight, Jesus a try!

Ask for Goodnight, Jesus at your local Catholic bookseller, or order online from Amazon.com or the publisher, Sophia Institute Press.
