Amelia Bentrup reviews Green and Gold, a new heartwarming Christian family film set to release January 31, 2025.
Some movies are funny, some movies are entertaining, some movies keep you on the edge of your seat and some movies help restore your faith in humanity. Green and Gold, a new family-friendly movie starring Craig T. Nelson and Madison Lawlor, is the latter.
Set on a Wisconsin dairy farm back at a time when phones were still attached to walls and music was listened to on cassette tapes, this heart-warming film seeks to shed light on the plight of the small farmer and the disappearing family farm.
Buck (Craig T. Nelson) is a struggling dairy farmer who decides to literally bet the farm on his favorite team winning the Superbowl. Meanwhile, his talented granddaughter, Jenny (Madison Lawlor), who lives and works with him, is going through her own struggle and difficulties. Torn between her life on the farm and her dreams of making music, she goes through her own days of reckoning as she figures out what is really important to her.
Buck and Jenny are Christians and are regularly shown in church and praying to God. However, their faith is tested by recent trials and they must learn to trust and seek God in a whole new way when tragedy happens.
A realistic portrayal of the life of a farming family
The scenery is both breathtaking and realistic. As someone who has experience working with cows, I can testify that Green and Gold does not show a whitewashed, clean picture of farming life. The life of this farming family is realistically portrayed in both the beauty and the muck.
Watching this film is like drinking a glass of warm milk. It goes down slowly and is comfortable and warming. This is not a fast-paced movie, but rather something to be savored and enjoyed. It has the comforting predictability of all feel-good, heartwarming movies and leaves the viewer’s faith in humanity restored and renewed.
Who would enjoy this movie?
Green and Gold is appropriate for all ages, however, will be most enjoyed by teens, older children, and adults. It is a movie the entire family can enjoy watching together, but may not hold the interest of young children. I believe this is a movie that would be particularly enjoyed by the older generation and may be fun to sit down and watch with grandparents.
Most viewers would not find this movie objectionable at all; however, there are a few scenes that show Buck working out in his tight, white underwear. That said, the language is clean and the values are decidedly Christian.
Overall, this is a film I can whole-heartedly recommend. Viewers who know and love the Midwest farming lifestyle will be drawn to this film and relate to it. Other viewers who may not have personal experience with farms will still be inspired by the family's struggles and fascinated by an inside and realistic look at life on a small farm.
Green and Gold premieres in theaters January 31, 2025. Tickets are available at GreenAndGoldMovie.com.
