The Unbound community celebrates the wisdom of mothers and their ability to know what their families need most to succeed.

In countries around the world, mothers are celebrated in special ways during the upcoming month of May. Mother’s Day in the U.S. and elsewhere is observed on the second Sunday, while, in Catholic tradition, May is the month of Mary, Mother of Jesus.

At Unbound, we believe in the wisdom of mothers and their ability to know what their families need most to succeed. It’s why our programs are designed in partnership with mothers, and why every day is a good day to recognize the contributions moms make to their families and communities.

Moms like Rosemary in Kenya give us examples of hard work and sacrifice. The mother of three starts her day at 4 a.m. to beat traffic into Nairobi and arrive on time to the farmers market, where she buys vegetables and other groceries in bulk and transports them to her stall in the Kangemi informal community. She closes her store at 9 p.m.

“Getting fatigued is normal,” Rosemary said. “But they say when you are searching for something you don’t tire. It means if you get lazy, everything will fail.”

Rosemary’s 20-year-old daughter, Desma, is a university student who’s been sponsored through Unbound since just before her 7th birthday and now has an Unbound scholarship. Rosemary is grateful for the support and the opportunity to participate in the Unbound Savings and Credit Cooperative in Nairobi, which has helped her build her business.

“God is great because my daughter was recruited into the [sponsorship] program,” she said.

Please join the Unbound community in a prayer for mothers around the world:

Lord of life, bless Rosemary and mothers everywhere who toil long hours for their children. May they find strength in your mother’s example and respite in your loving embrace. We remember our mothers and grandmothers who have gone to their eternal rest. May they find peace with you in your heavenly home. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.
