Anne DeSantis explains how to spend Advent in preparation for a peaceful, Christ-centered Christmas.
We are in the beautiful season of Advent, a sacred time of waiting, watching, and preparing for the birth of Jesus Christ. Amidst the twinkling lights, holiday shopping, and full calendars, it can be easy to forget what we’re really preparing for: the coming of our Savior. The world tells us to hurry, spend, and indulge, while the Church invites us to pause, pray, and hope.
For Catholic moms and families, Advent and Christmas are not just about gifts and gatherings; they are about faith, love, and the incarnation of Christ. To truly experience the joy and meaning of the season, here are a few gentle reminders to help you and your family have the best Christmas ever — rooted in Christ.

Refuse to be Swept Up in Busyness
Say no ... gracefully. Slow down, and don’t apologize for it. Advent is a quiet season of prayer, much like a “little Lent.” It is a time to make room for Christ by simplifying, sacrificing, and turning our hearts back to Him. When we refuse to be overwhelmed by the noise of the world, we make space for God to speak and for our families to grow closer together in prayer and peace.
Prayer is the life of the new heart. It ought to animate us at every moment. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2697)
Forgive Someone, And Reach Out in Love
Christmas is about the greatest reconciliation of all: God becoming man to bring us back to Him. If there’s someone in your life with whom you've had conflict or distance, pray for the courage to take a first step toward peace. Forgiveness may not always lead to reconciliation, but it always leads to freedom. This Advent, be the one who brings Christ’s peace into the relationship.
Teach Your Children to Love, Not Just Receive
While it's tempting to focus on presents and fun, let’s teach our children that Christmas is about love — God's love. When we serve the poor, make time for others, and show mercy, we’re giving them a gift far greater than anything under the tree. Read the story of the Nativity together. Share about the saints who served joyfully. Let your home become a small school of love, centered on the Christ Child.

A Final Thought
Let this be the Advent and Christmas where less truly becomes more. More prayer. More love. More time together. More space for Jesus. He doesn’t need extravagance — He needs your heart. Have the best Christmas ever, because you let Christ be the center.
