Maria V. Gallagher discovers a fascinating retelling of Jesus’ ministry in the animated film Light of the World.
When I was a child, I loved to watch animated films. I viewed all the classics, from Cinderella to Snow White. I liked to imagine myself as being part of the action that played out on the silver screen. At Halloween, I would dress up as my favorite animated character, avoiding witches and goblins and embracing cartoon royalty.
By the time my daughter arrived on the scene, Disney princesses were all the rage. She adored Beauty and the Beast and recently she regaled me with her own version of the song, “Be Our Guest.” Her devotion to the Disney classic made me smile. And it reminded me of all those times that she had watched movies as a little girl, captivated by the intriguing plotlines and colorful characters.
Through the Eyes of a Child
As a fan of animated fare, I was eager to watch a preview of the new film Light of the World by the Salvation Poem Project. The movie takes place in the year 30 A.D., when people are eagerly awaiting the appearance of the Messiah. Among them is a young boy named John, and the filmmakers tell the story of Jesus’ ministry and Passion through his eyes.
The film is visually stunning and kept my attention throughout. It shows both the humanity and divinity of Jesus in a powerful way. From the wedding feast at Cana to His agony in the garden, we witness the trajectory of Jesus’ life on earth and His impact on the disciples.
A Different Kind of Messiah
Jesus was not the kind of Messiah that many had envisioned. He did not come to claim power on earth, but to free men and women from their sins. The movie does not shy away from Jesus’ suffering, lending it a great deal of credibility.
The film also offers its share of humor, adding to its entertainment value. The lightheartedness also expertly balances out the more sobering aspects of the story.
A Timeless Tale
Jesus’ ministry is a timeless tale which empowers and energizes. When we see him in full healing mode, it strengthens our faith and can increase our trust in Him. When we hear His parable about the Good Samaritan, we are challenged to love our enemies in word and in deed. Throughout His brief earthly life, Jesus carried out His mission with care and compassion.
It is truly heartwarming to see the effect Jesus has on His disciples. During the course of the movie, we witness the increase in their devotion to Him. True, they were not perfect men, but they were inspired to follow Him, offering us an example of how to live our lives.
I can imagine little ones being fascinated by the film Light of the World. Parents should be aware of the fact that the movie deals honestly with Christ’s Crucifixion. As a result, I believe the movie is best for audiences ages 9 and up.
A Touching Experience
I found that watching Light of the World was a truly touching experience. Jesus came alive for me in this endearing film. It is the kind of artistic work which speaks to the hearts of people of various ages and backgrounds. It is also the type of movie that I would like to see more than once in order to fully appreciate its artistry.
