Lectio Divina Out Loud: Erika Dix reacts to a statement about seeing God.
Who turned the rock into pools of water, flint into a flowing spring. (Psalm 114:8)
Have you ever had anyone say to you, “I just don’t see God”? As a mom, I know I have seen God every time I look upon the greatest gift in my life, my children. There is also the beauty of a sunset (which we call “God Lighting”), the silence of a cathedral during Adoration, the crackle of colorful leaves underfoot during an autumn walk, and the waves crashing on the beach at sunrise. These miracles of nature and acts of Creation bear witness to God’s presence in our lives. The only way to not see them is to take them for granted.
A Rock into Water
As most of us know, a rock is an ordinary, solid object. So when the extraordinary happens and a rock becomes a pool of water, we take notice. But does something extraordinary have to happen for God to get our attention? Does He take care of us in little, ordinary ways to share His presence with us?
Fractured Flint into a Flowing Spring
Flint is a hard but brittle substance that when fractured becomes very sharp. When I picture a flowing spring, I see water making its way through a path of rocks that alters but does not cut the path. God does not want to cut us down but shows us how to be flexible when obstacles get in our own paths.
God’s Image Through Nature
The image of God is everywhere, but only when we are open to see it, does it show itself. God’s imagery is in all of Creation, and His voice is what the images are showing us. He shares His actual presence, providence, and protection with us, and we sing His praises in Psalm 114. The nature imagery it describes is God’s protection for us, and a reminder of where He wants to be, close to us.
Even if you feel like you “just don’t see God,” He is already there guiding and sharing His presence with you. All you need to do is notice the miracles of nature that surround you, like a pool of water, a flowing spring, or a smile on your child’s face.
Prayer:
Lord God, thank You for Your presence in our lives, and that You are constantly working in nature to get our attention. May we not only “see” Your presence, but feel it as well.
