Lilia Grundy shares how the whispers of the wind inspired her Holy Spirit scavenger hunt.

Whispers of the Wind

“The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)

Inhale. Exhale. Repeat. The sounds of my breathing became louder as each step hit the pavement. I was on an evening jog and suddenly felt the soft breeze on my face. I stopped and looked up to see the trees swaying. I recall this moment vividly because it was the first time I met the Holy Spirit.

Fast forward to present day, I lace up my shoes to head out for a run, but this time is different. My two young daughters are coming with me. As we hit the trails of Captain William Clark Park, I become very aware of the wind blowing and how blessed I am to experience this moment with them. A hit of pure joy—that’s what I felt in that instant, and realized how the Spirit is always moving within us.

Seeking the Signs

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a believer in seeing signs as signals from heaven. The (2002) sci-fi movie Signs starring Mel Gibson is a far cry from the inspirations of our Catholic faith, and yet it was a validation for me that many others also seek signs (and receive them).

And while I’ve struggled to build my relationship with the Holy Spirit over the years, I find peace in now finally being able to be aware the spirit moving within my life.

I purposefully seek its signs on my trail runs—this has become a fun “Holy Spirit Scavenger” hunt for me. The birds singing in perfect harmony—a symphony just for me! The sparkling ripples running through the Columbia River. The hawk swooping down to the ground as if showing off to say hello.

Sharing the Sweet Spirit

I am also aware of the moments when the Spirit prompts me into action. A sudden idea to help me promote an initiative at work. A spontaneous hug from one of my daughters. Coffee made by my husband, waiting for me on my nightstand when I wake up. The flickering of the candle in the Adoration chapel.

All these signs remind me that I need to share the Spirit’s gifts with others. Words of encouragement. A smile. A text to simply say hello and that I’m thinking of you.

When I search for the spirit, it really is everywhere. I hope you see and feel it too. Join me in praying the Holy Spirit Novena.

Where do you hear or see the Holy Spirit?

“The Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you." (John 14:17)
