My True Love Gave to Me: A Children's Catechism for the Twelve Days of Christmas

by Katie Warner; illustrated by Elizabeth Zelasko

Publisher: TAN Books

My True Love Gave to Me by Katie Warner beautifully captures the heart of Catholicism through both its poetic narrative and the stunning illustrations by Elizabeth Zelasko. Inspired by the rhythm of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," this book can even be sung aloud, adding a unique and engaging dimension to its use.

A treasury for faith formation

The lessons Warner imparts are profound, and Zelasko’s artwork enriches the experience by incorporating sacred art, numerology, and religious icons. As a catechist, I see endless opportunities for using this book in faith formation, from first grade through high school. The themes can easily fill an entire school years’ worth of lessons, especially leading up to Christmas and beyond.

For instance, the numerology alone provides ample material for creative lesson planning. Teachers could explore how each number connects to biblical concepts and Catholic tradition. For teens preparing for Confirmation, this book offers a memorable way to learn through simple words and meaningful images. As Zelasko aptly puts it, “90% of our learning as children is visual, so what better way to teach the faith than with beautiful images?”

Indeed, what better way?

Each “day” in the book draws from the rich tapestry of Catholic tradition. On the ninth day, for example, we are reminded of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22), paired with an illustration inspired by a stained-glass window from the Vatican. The fifth day features the Torah scrolls, complete with their Hebrew names and spellings — a beautiful nod to our shared Judeo-Christian heritage.

Warner also includes helpful explanations at the back of the book, offering additional insights into the significance of each number. For example, while the third day highlights the theological virtues, teachers can also draw lessons from the Holy Trinity, the Magi’s gifts, or the three days Christ spent in the tomb. The comparison of the nine fruits of the Spirit in Galatians with the twelve listed in our Catechism offers students an exciting opportunity to explore Scripture in depth.

Imagine students joyfully searching the Bible for more examples of how God uses numbers to reveal His truths — a teacher’s dream come true!

While some of the terminology may be unfamiliar to today’s students, such as “Extreme Unction” instead of the “Sacrament of the Sick” or “eight blessings” instead of the “Beatitudes,” these moments become teachable opportunities. As a catechist, I would welcome the chance to guide students in understanding these terms and their evolution within Church teaching.

How can families use this book?

Families reading this book together can transform the twelve days of Christmas into a true celebration of faith, culminating in the Epiphany. Warner provides parents with an invaluable tool to make lessons “stick” through storytelling and engaging activities. Imagine teaching your child how to say “Genesis” in Hebrew (Beresheet), helping them write a Hebrew word, or discovering the hidden details in the illustrations of the four Gospel writers. These are moments that will leave lasting impressions.

In my home, the twelve days following Christmas are the true holiday season. Keeping children focused on Christ can be challenging, but My True Love Gave to Me makes it easier. This book takes readers on a meaningful journey through our faith, reminding us that Christ, our Savior, is the ultimate gift from our Heavenly Father — our true love.

Katie Warner and Elizabeth Zelasko have given us a priceless treasure in My True Love Gave to Me. It is a gift of knowledge, and knowledge of our faith is one of the greatest gifts we can share with others.
