Anne DeSantis discusses three ways to begin the path toward new horizons after a personal or family tragedy.
As families of faith, we can depend upon our faith to get us through the hard times of life; however, it is not always easy. Our faith does not guarantee that we will be spared of pain, challenges, or crises. There are various ways to find your way through adversity, and there are also ways to be led toward new beginnings.
Let’s look at three ways to begin the path toward new horizons after a personal or family tragedy.
One day at a time
Perhaps the best advice after a crisis is to take life “one day at a time.” As people of faith, we may often feel that in committing ourselves to Christ, we will be less likely to find ourselves affected by a world of sin. In some ways, this could be true, since if we are seeking to live lives of holiness, we may experience fewer of the effects of our own personal sin.
However, we still live in a world greatly affected by sin. We will definitely feel and experience the pain that sin creates. We cannot escape it. Taking one day at a time will help you and your family to get through those times of trauma as they appear in our lives each day.
Seek proper counsel
Seeking the right kind of help is one of the most positive things we can do in setting off on new beginnings. Whether the challenge is the loss of a loved one, relationship crisis, money issues, addiction, or something else, finding the proper help is key in getting through hard times.
Ask a trusted friend or priest, or do a thorough internet search to find the proper assistance in guiding you through next steps in dealing with trauma.
Prayer and time with the Lord
Jesus is our best friend, especially when tragedy strikes in our lives. Sometimes praying is the most difficult thing to do when you are feeling pressured, sad, or nervous. Simply “being with” the Lord in contemplative prayer, in Eucharistic Adoration, or during Mass is a time to reflect and to feel his presence in your life.
Again, take each day as it comes, and trust God that, no matter what, you will make it through with His help. This is not a magical occurrence; it is accomplished through deep trust in God’s plan for your life through prayer and through taking the proper steps to find healing.
New beginnings are possible for all of us, no matter the circumstances. A change of scenery may also help, whether it be your physical location, new acquaintances, or new ways of thinking. Taking the time to do so will help you and your family find the right pathways to discover the doors God wishes you to open and to close.
No matter what, trust that you and your family will experience healing on the path of life in taking one day at a time, seeking proper counsel, and spending time with Jesus.
