Praying with saints enhances ordinary days
Are you looking for a New Year’s practice that will enhance your spiritual life in a meaningful way? Pray With Us: A Saint for Every Day by Belinda Terro Mooney invites you to learn about and pray with a different saint or blessed every day of the year.
In the Foreword, Mike Aquilina comments that celebrating the feasts of the Church “make the Faith memorable, and they make it sweet.” He goes on to say that the Christian calendar enhances “otherwise ordinary days ... [giving] a certain momentum to spiritual life ... [E]very season is steeped in the mysteries of Jesus Christ and the lives of His saints” (9).
Learn about many heavenly friends
Belinda Terro Mooney, a Licensed Master Social Worker and former homeschooling mom, emphasizes the beauty of the Communion of Saints. She reminds us that “it is a good and holy thing to ask people to pray for us and to pray with us — both those with us here on earth and those in heaven.” The prayers of the saints are “particularly powerful . . . because they have completed their time on earth and are already enjoying eternity with God in heaven” (11). The saints are the ultimate prayer warriors. They “will always help us to intercede effectively for ourselves and others” (13).
Pray With Us: A Saint for Every Day features one page for each day that includes a short reflection for the featured saint of the day followed by a prayer. While the “famous” saints, such as Saints Rose of Lima, Teresa of Calcutta, Francis of Assisi, and John Paul II, are included, there are many less-familiar saints in these pages. This book would be a lovely addition to a family’s morning prayer time in the coming year. Both adults and children will look forward to discovering the saint of the day.
If a particular saint holds a special appeal for you or one of your children, Pray With Us: A Saint for Every Day could be a jumping-off point to then learn more about that saint. At the very least, both you and your children will be introduced to many members of the Communion of Saints and are sure to make some new heavenly friends.
