Allison Auth reviews a book from Voyage Comics that uses seek-and-find pictures to help children learn about the sacraments.

When our copy of Seek and You Will Find: A Catholic Sacraments Adventure arrived, I left it out on the table for a few days. All of our kids, ages 3-12, stopped to browse through it, but our 7-year-old sat down and read it cover to cover. In this book, written by Kristina Schoh and illustrated by Michael LaVoy, the pictures are bright, cartoonish yet captivating, and the little text blurbs are good bite-sized chunks of information for a young child to read.

After a page on an introduction to the sacraments, there are two pages dedicated to each of the seven sacraments. The first page has an image of the sacrament being celebrated and about 5 objects, such as a chasuble, chrism oil, or a tabernacle to find in the picture. The second page has little kids stating facts about that sacrament. My daughter said she thought it was interesting to learn that only bishops, priests, or deacons receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Other interesting facts mention the vows made during the Sacrament of Matrimony and the ones to consecrate calls down the Holy Spirit to make something holy. One thing we did note under the Sacrament of Confirmation: although the book said it is usually for kids ages 12-17, we live in a diocese with restored order, where our children are confirmed around the age of 9.

Additionally, there are prayers on every other page, from the Our Father and Glory Be to the Memorare and Apostles Creed, and even a prayer for the Faithful Departed. I would say this book is best for kids ages 4-8. It would make a great gift for a Baptism or First Communion.

I was worried that the seek and find pictures would be too basic for my 7- and 9-year-olds, but they still enjoyed it anyway. With its colorful pictures and easy to read blurbs, kids can learn a lot about each of the seven sacraments in an entertaining way. Our kids have enjoyed a lot of the books coming out from Voyage Comics and this one is a great addition to our collection.
