Anne DeSantis shares three ways Catholic moms (and dads!) can begin to teach their children the faith beginning in infancy.
As Catholic moms, teaching the faith can begin in infanthood. Children’s brains are like sponges, and dialogue and exposure to elements of the Catholic faith can start early in life. There are many simple ways to introduce kids to a relationship with Christ. Here are a few:
Pray as a family
When babies are in utero, prayer can be said for baby as a family. Hearing is developed long before birth, and your baby can hear your voices in prayer. There is something very special about praying for the faith of your new baby beginning as early as possible. Continue to pray each day as a family starting in infancy, and continue this throughout your family life. It will be a natural daily occurrence for a child when prayer has been incorporated since before birth.
Talk about Jesus
Show your toddler the tabernacle at church. Point to it and say, “This is where Jesus lives.” Explain to your child that Jesus is in the tabernacle, in the monstrance, and in the Blessed Sacrament. Also, explain that Jesus lives within the hearts of those who love him; He is alive!
After receiving Holy Communion, explain that Jesus is inside of you. Pray reverently after receiving Jesus at Mass. Your child will see the love you have for the Lord during this quiet time of prayer and reflection. Talk about Jesus often at home and in all of your daily travels with your toddler.
Read books about Jesus and the faith
Purchase good Catholic books about the life of Jesus. There are many wonderful board books geared for infants and toddlers about Jesus and the Catholic faith (Pauline Books & Media have quite a few). Purchase these books for holiday gifts and birthdays, and make these gifts the centerpiece of your giving. Your toddler will soon begin to become excited to receive these books and to read them with you. You and your child may also enjoy listening to audiobooks appropriate for your child’s age.
Integrate discussions about Jesus and the beauty of the Catholic faith in family dialogue throughout the day with your child. As you follow these simple steps to teach your baby or toddler about Jesus, you will find that he/she will naturally become enthusiastic about learning more. Pray for your little one, and as time progresses your family will grow in faith to a much greater degree.
