Caitrin Bennett reviews a new guide for asking God to perform a miracle in your life.

The Miracle Book: A Simple Guide to Asking for the Impossible

By Anthony DeStefano
Published by Sophia Institute Press

Do you really believe in miracles? Have you ever specifically asked God for a miracle? The subtitle of this new book by Anthony DeStefano sums up perfectly what it is: “A Simple Guide to Asking for the Impossible.”

 Miracle Book

Set-Up of the Book

The Miracle Book is a short work with bite-sized chapters. Each one focuses on another paradox related to asking God for a miracle: two concepts that seem at odds at first glance but actually make sense with further study. For example, how can we be called to be precise and specific about what we want in our prayers, yet also be open to whatever God wills? Furthermore, are we supposed to be persistent in our prayer, like the widow pleading with the judge in Scripture, or are we supposed to believe decisively that whatever we have asked of God will be ours?

In each of these “miracle paradoxes,” author Anthony DeStefano roots both “contradictory” concepts in Scripture and tradition. Then, he helps the reader understand how the two concepts can actually coexist in our faith. A deeper understanding of each of these paradoxes can help you be in the best position to ask God for a miracle.

An Inspiring and Practical Work

I had previously enjoyed several of DeStefano’s picture books with my kids, such as How the Angels Got Their Wings. This was my first time reading one of his adult books, and I can recommend this just as highly. DeStefano has a lovely way of simplifying deep spiritual truths and showing you how to apply them to your faith life. The miracle anecdotes he has included were inspiring, and the prayer he slowly puts together through the book is comprehensive and very practical.

Nobody can guarantee you a miracle. There are no magic words that will make God say yes to your prayer today. But this little guide certainly helped me grow in faith in God’s power and His desire for my good. It helped me examine my own will and submit better to God’s will. I have been praying the long and beautiful “Miracle Prayer” at the end of the book for a miracle of my own. While I haven’t been granted this miracle (at least not yet), each time I pray it I feel more grateful and at peace. Through this book, God has reminded me how deeply and desperately I need His grace. That can be easier to forget when I’m not begging for a miracle.
