The Spiritual Motherhood of Priests (Maternidade Espiritual dos Sacerdotes)

Flávia Ghelardi explains how wives and mothers can take on the role of spiritual mother for priests.

A few years ago, I read the biography of Blessed Conchita (María Concepción Cabrera Arias de Armida), a Mexican mother of nine children who had a deeply mystical life between the duties of wife and mother. She received a special call to be the “spiritual mother of priests.” All the works she founded were aimed at helping and praying for priests.  

I've often thought that having a more contemplative life isn't for me; after all, I'm a wife, a mother now of grown-up children, and some time ago I returned to professional life, so this style of spiritual life would be reserved for the religious who live in the convent. Then I look at Blessed Conchita's life and see that if I give myself entirely to Christ through my daily tasks, I will be able to contemplate and live the search for holiness in my circumstances.  

Conchita received extraordinary graces and lived a truly mystical life, but even so she is an example, because if God chose a wife and mother for such a great mission, he also called every wife and mother to fulfill their own mission, with a full spiritual life, without which the world will not be as good and as beautiful. 

The Importance of Praying for Priests 

Another very important thing I learned from Blessed Conchita was the importance of praying for priests. She calls it the “spiritual motherhood of priests.” It's as if we adopted priests as true spiritual mothers, to pray and sacrifice for them.  

Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus also dedicated many prayers to priests. In a letter to her sister Celine, written on October 14, 1890, she says:

Celine dear, it's always the same thing I have to say to you. Ah, let's pray for the priests, every day shows how rare Jesus' friends are ... It seems to me that this must be what is more sensitive to him than ingratitude, especially seeing souls consecrated to God give the heart that belongs so absolutely to him to others. (LT 122) 

Praying and taking spiritual care of priests is also a way of taking care of ourselves; after all, without the priest we don't have the sacraments, which are fundamental for the salvation of our souls and the souls of all those we love. There is a real spiritual battle going on, in which the devil wants to draw priests away from their true vocation, from their call to be Christ's instruments for saving souls. And each of us can help them by praying and sacrificing for them. 

Save Others 

Imagine you see a child drowning in a swimming pool. You immediately jump into the pool to save her, even if you can't swim very well. Our instinct drives us to try to save that child's life.  

If we had eyes to see the supernatural world, we would see many souls literally drowning in a sea of sin and risking a death far worse than physical death: eternal death in hell, a place of suffering, pain and hatred that will never pass. Our instinct should also lead us to try to save these souls and one of the ways we can do this is by praying for priests, who are the lifeguards of these souls, the paramedics who have the power to restore the life of grace to those who are dead through sin.  

How to Practice Spiritual Motherhood 

There are a few ways to live out this spiritual motherhood of priests. You can include them by name (the priests you know) in your prayers, Rosaries and Adoration. You can include priests and all the clergy in general. You can also say specific prayers for priests. There are several you can find online. Here I'll mention one that was composed by Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus: 

O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with your Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. 
Let Your holy love surround them and shield them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and in heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown. (Prayer for priests, shared on Ascension.com)

The spiritual motherhood of priests is above all a concern for the sanctification of all the clergy, the same concern we have for our own children. It can include material care, if you have the opportunity to help a priest concretely, whether by offering a meal, clothes, or gifts on special dates. Many priests feel lonely, so inviting them to your home and spending time with your family can be a form of maternal care.  

Spiritual motherhood is a private devotion, no external act is required and no one needs to know that you have taken on this mission. Because it is spiritual, it can also be undertaken by women who are not mothers, whether they are consecrated to religious life or not. I encourage you to prayerfully discern whether this would be an apostolate you could take on, joining the many spiritual mothers of priests around the world. 

Maternidade Espiritual dos Sacerdotes

Há alguns anos li a biografia da beata Conchita (María Concepción Cabrera Arias de Armida) uma mexicana mãe de 9 filhos que possuía uma profunda vida mística entre os afazeres de esposa e mãe. Ela recebeu um chamado especial para ser “mãe espiritual dos sacerdotes”. Todas as obras que fundou tinham o objetivo de ajudar e rezar pelos sacerdotes.  

Muitas vezes pensei que ter uma vida mais contemplativa não é para mim, afinal sou esposa, mãe agora de filhos adultos e há algum tempo voltei à vida profissional, então esse estilo de vida espiritual seria reservada às religiosas que vivem no convento. Então, olho para a vida da beata Conchita e vejo que, se me entregar inteiramente a Cristo através dos meus afazeres diários, conseguirei contemplar e viver a busca pela santidade nas minhas circunstâncias.  

Conchita recebeu graças extraordinárias e tinha uma vida verdadeiramente mística, mas mesmo assim é exemplo, pois se Deus escolheu uma esposa e mãe para uma missão tão grande, também chamou a cada esposa e mãe para cumprir sua própria missão, com uma vida espiritual plena, sem a qual o mundo não será tão bom e tão belo.  

A importância de rezar pelos sacerdotes 

Outra coisa muito importante que aprendi com a Beata Conchita foi a importância de rezarmos pelos sacerdotes. Ela chama de “maternidade espiritual dos sacerdotes”. É como se adotássemos os sacerdotes como verdadeiras mães espirituais, para rezarmos e nos sacrificarmos por eles.  

Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus também dedicou muitas orações aos sacerdotes. Em uma carta à sua irmã Celine, escrita em 14 de outubro de 1890 ela diz: Celine querida, é sempre a mesma coisa que tenho para te dizer. Ah! rezemos pelos sacerdotes, cada dia mostra como são raros os amigos de Jesus... Parece-me que deve ser isso que deve ser mais sensível a ele do que a ingratidão, principalmente ver as almas consagradas a Deus darem a outros o coração que lhe pertence tão absolutamente... (LT 122) 

Rezar e cuidar espiritualmente dos sacerdotes é também uma forma de cuidar de nós mesmas, afinal, sem o sacerdote não temos os sacramentos, que são fundamentais para a salvação das nossas almas e das almas de todos os que amamos. Existe uma verdadeira batalha espiritual, onde o demônio quer afastar os sacerdotes de sua verdadeira vocação, de seu chamado para serem os instrumentos de Cristo para salvar as almas. E cada uma de nós pode ajudá-los, rezando e nos sacrificando por eles. 

Salvar os outros 

Imagine que você vê uma criança se afogando numa piscina. Imediatamente a reação é pular na piscina para salvá-la, mesmo se você não sabe nadar muito bem. Nosso instinto nos impele a tentar salvar a vida dessa criança.  

Se tivéssemos olhos para enxergar o mundo sobrenatural, veríamos muitas almas literalmente se afogando num mar de pecados e se arriscando a morrer uma morte muito pior que a morte física, a morte eterna no inferno, um local de sofrimento, dor e ódio que jamais passarão. Nosso instinto também deveria nos levar a tentar salvar essas almas e uma das formas que podemos fazer isso é rezando pelos sacerdotes, que são os salva-vidas dessas almas, os paramédicos que tem o poder de restaurar a vida da graça àqueles que estão mortos pelo pecado.  

Como praticar a maternidade espiritual 

Existem algumas formas de viver essa maternidade espiritual dos sacerdotes. Você pode incluí-los nominalmente (os padres que você conhece) em suas orações, terços, adorações. Pode incluir os padres e todo clero em geral. Pode ainda fazer orações específicas pelos sacerdotes. Existem várias que pode encontrar online. Aqui vou mencionar uma que foi composta por Sta. Teresinha do Menino Jesus: 

Ó Jesus, Sacerdote Eterno, guardai os Vossos sacerdotes no Vosso sagrado Coração, onde nada de mal lhes possa acontecer, conservai imaculadas as suas mãos ungidas, que tocam todos os dias o Vosso sagrado Corpo.
Conservai imaculado os seus lábios, diariamente, tingidos com o Vosso Preciosíssimo Sangue. Conservai os seus corações, que selastes com o sublime Sacramento da Ordem, puros e livres de todo o terreno.
Que o Vosso amor os proteja e os preserve do contágio do mundo. Abençoai os seus trabalhos apostólicos com abundantes frutos.
Fazei que as almas confiadas aos seus cuidados e direção sejam a sua alegria na Terra e formem no Céu a sua gloriosa e imperecível coroa. Amém. (Ascension) 

A maternidade espiritual dos sacerdotes é acima de tudo uma preocupação com a santificação de todo o clero, a mesma preocupação que temos com nossos próprios filhos. Pode incluir cuidados materiais, se você tiver a oportunidade de ajudar algum sacerdote concretamente, seja oferecendo uma refeição, roupas, presentes em datas especiais. Muitos padres sentem-se solitários, então convidar para visitar a sua casa e passar algum tempo com a sua família pode ser uma forma de cuidar maternalmente deles.  

A maternidade espiritual é uma devoção privada, não é preciso nenhum ato externo e ninguém precisa saber que você assumiu essa missão. Por ser espiritual, pode ser assumida também por aquelas mulheres que não são mães, sejam consagradas à vida religiosa ou não. Incentivo você a discernir em oração se esse seria um apostolado que possa assumir, juntando-se a muitas mães espirituais de sacerdotes em todo o mundo.
