There Is No Saint Named Kelly

Our primary job on earth should be to help those around us become saints. As a parent, doing this for my children is more important to me than anything else, though daily I struggle with my own modeling of leading a virtuous life. Having this book helps continue the conversation of sainthood being attainable. Who more important to expose to them to than the saints and the examples they set forth?
When I received There is No Saint Named Kelly, my 10-year-old quickly found it and asked to read it with me. On a near-daily basis, my children and I try to learn something about the saints, usually using an app due to our busy lifestyle. The fact though that my child voluntarily turned to a picture book is noteworthy, and I am very thankful for the concept of this book in particular.
The Importance of Choosing a Name
Naming my children was one of the most difficult tasks I've faced in my life. A name carries so much weight. Growing up, I always pictured choosing a "classic" or "time-tested" name; for example, James or Andrew. However, my husband was not a fan of those choices, and together we strived to have names that were uniquely special and meaningful to us. Ultimately, the names we went with would be considered rare, and because of this, are not the "traditional" classic saints' names that are easy to come by.
At one time I heard Pope Francis express concern that Catholics were falling out of trend with choosing saints’ names for their children. This caused me much distress: Is a child destined for failure if not being given a saint’s name, despite a parent still striving for their child to be made for God?
A Reminder of Our Call to Be Saints
These are very big questions for adults and children alike. Finding identity can be such a struggle. In today's world our children are often exposed to influencers through social media. In this picture book, following a character who similarly struggles with such questions, the plot reminds each child, whether they have a common name, or a rare one: You are special! You are worthy! We are ALL called to be saints. It’s a simple but profound message for any child (and grown-up) trying to find their place in God's glorious plans for them.
