Anne DeSantis encourages moms to embrace their own unique abilities to serve their families and the world.

As Catholic mothers, we often hear the phrase, "Use your gifts and talents for the good of the Church." We lovingly instill this message in our children, encouraging them to embrace their unique abilities and share them with the world. But as we guide them, do we take the time to reflect on our own gifts? How can we truly use the talents God has given us to become the best version of ourselves? Let’s explore a few ways to better understand and embrace our God-given gifts.

Ponder and Pray

Each of us is uniquely designed by God with a distinct personality and temperament. Some of us are outgoing and energetic, while others are more introspective and reserved. Many fall somewhere in between. In the spiritual life, we recognize the four classic temperaments: choleric, melancholic, sanguine, and phlegmatic. Each of these temperaments has its own strengths and spiritual gifts.

There are wonderful books and resources available that explore these personality traits in depth. Tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and other personality assessments can also provide valuable insights. However, the most important step is prayer. Spend time in reflection before God, asking Him to reveal more about who you are and how He wants you to use your gifts. Consider sitting before the Blessed Sacrament and opening your heart to His guidance. God knows you better than anyone — so ask for His wisdom!

Ask Others

Sometimes those closest to us recognize our gifts before we do. Be bold — ask your spouse, children, and trusted friends how they see you. What strengths and talents do they notice in you? Their insights might reveal hidden gifts you hadn’t even considered! Taking their perspectives into account can provide a richer, fuller understanding of the ways God has uniquely equipped you to serve.

Take Action

After praying, reflecting, and seeking wisdom from others, it’s time to act! How can you put your gifts to work for the Church and your community? Are you a natural leader who can organize events or ministries? Do you have a compassionate heart that makes you a great listener and mentor? Are you skilled at getting things done efficiently? Perhaps God is calling you to serve in ways you haven’t yet imagined.

Consider involving your family in this journey. Maybe your husband and children can join you in ministry work, strengthening both your faith and your family bond. No matter what your gifts are, trust that God has a plan for you. With Him by your side, you can use your talents in ways that bring joy, hope, and love to those around you.
