Rose Folsom found peace by adding a short and simple “Holy To-Do List” to her daily routine.

On too many days I measure my worth by the undone items on my to-do list. And they fester as a kind of low-grade fever in my soul that keeps me from enjoying what I have done.

I told a mentor yesterday that I loved checking in with her because it kept me from feeling like I was drowning with all that needs to be done in building my business. She said, “Why are you drowning yourself?”

Busted.

I realized that the sinking feeling of not having done enough, of not having been enough had become a habit that played right into the enemy’s hands. My feeling of failure didn’t track with reality. I had been focusing too much on what I’m not instead of who I am—and whose I am.

I had forgotten that my identity is God’s love for me. And that there is nothing I have to do to earn His love.

All the time I was “drowning myself,” I was drowning out the eternal word of love that God was speaking to me.

Exhale ...

Time for a reality check. Time to focus back on who we are in God’s eyes. His opinion is the only one that matters, and His view of us is always based on a greater love than we can imagine.

Take that, to-do list!

Here’s some truth that makes the lie of inadequacy fade away like fog when the sun comes out.

With age-old love I have loved you;  so I have kept my mercy toward you. (Jeremiah 31:3b)

See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. (1 John 3:1a)

But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit. (Titus 3:4-5)

God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved (from Colossians 3:12)

The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior, Who will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, Who will sing joyfully because of you. (Zephaniah 3:17)

and my favorite:

For the Lord takes delight in his people. (Psalm 149:4a)

So there we have it from the mouth of God Almighty, who rejoices over us with singing and who doesn’t just put up with us or sit around waiting for us to mess up—He takes delight in us, every moment of every day.

Your holy to-do list

I invite you to join me in committing to two things we can do to break the mental habit of “not enough:”

  1. Bring to mind the words of love and delight God is actually saying to us at all times by copying your favorite onto a post-it to keep nearby.
  2. When we finish a task and before we jump to the next undone thing, take a moment to acknowledge, internalize, and celebrate our accomplishment, believing that God is working through us in a powerful way.

By checking off our Holy To-Do List, we can let the lie of “not enough” fade away and the truth of “beloved daughter” take first place in our thoughts, where it belongs.
