Today's Gospel: John 18:33B-37 - Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Today, this last solemnity of our liturgical year, we meet Jesus before Pilate. The King of the Universe stands before a prefect of a distant emperor. Truth stands before the culture…and the culture doesn’t like it much.
“Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice,” Jesus tells us. Pilate, of course, listens not to truth but the crowd. Pilate wanted so very badly to set Jesus free, but he wanted even more for the majority culture in which he lived to approve of him. So he washed his hands and sent the King of the Universe, the Truth, to die on a cross.
On this Solemnity of Christ the King, we are surrounded by reminders that this world passes and that God, our true King, is always just, is always true, and will not change with the passing tastes of the passing crowd. The crowd leads to approval, belonging, ease — but if we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that all those things are temporary. The Truth leads to the Cross, of course, but the Cross is the established path to eternal life.
So which will we chose?
