Today's Gospel: John 8:51-59 The crashing and screaming died down. That’s when I knew something was really wrong. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? The kids are in another part of the house, keeping up a ruckus and “working it out.” You, on the other hand, are just trying to finish getting dinner ready so they can, you know, eat. And then it gets quiet. Today’s Gospel takes me down that path. The Jews are pushing Jesus, forcing Him to not just explain Himself, but to throw down the big guns. Using that name I AM is the verbal equivalent of making the crowd go quiet…right before it explodes. (Then He hides. His hour had not yet come.) Sometimes, it’s hard to hear the truth. And other times, it’s hard to tell the truth. There are times the truth can’t reach you, because you can’t hear it. You need grace, the space to listen, the ability to stop (or go, as the case may be). Consider, today, taking that time, making that space, stopping for a moment. There are many reasons this doesn’t make sense. But you’ll be better for it.

Ponder:

How is your faith in need of a tune-up? What might you do today to steer it closer to Jesus?

Pray:

Jesus, You speak truth. Grant me the grace to hear it.
