Today's Gospel: John 16:16-20
jIn St. John’s Gospel, Jesus mentions over and over again that He is going somewhere where the Jews and His disciples cannot follow, that He is going to prepare a place for them, and that He will come back to get them. As the time for His Passion grows closer, these sayings become more frequent. The poor apostles do not understand. How could they?
They murmur, question, and wonder what Jesus means, but they do not ask Him. Jesus knows, though, that they are frustrated because they do not understand.
Never be afraid to ask Jesus your questions. He knows you have them. Go to Jesus when you do not understand and ask Him to enlighten you.
Questions are not a bad thing. How can we possibly grasp with our finite minds an infinite God? We only need to have our hearts and minds open to His answer.
Sometimes, the answer is not always clear either, though. I am sure in today’s Gospel, the apostles were still trying to figure out what Jesus was talking about after He addressed their concerns. The notion of Jesus’ Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension was beyond their scope of comprehension, despite Jesus’ predictions. So, they just had to trust that Jesus knew what He was doing.
We, likewise, must trust Jesus. We can and even should ask Him our questions and for understanding. Yet, in the end, He is God and we are not. His ways are beyond us. There are some things that we just need to accept.
However, we can hold on to this promise of His: Jesus does not say that He will take away our sorrow, but He does promise that our sorrow will be turned into joy.
Ponder:
If Jesus was right here before you and you could ask Him anything, what would you ask? He is here—so go ahead and ask!
Pray:
Jesus, sometimes we do not understand what You are doing in our lives, but we trust You to work all things out for our good. We look forward to the day of eternal joy.
