Today's Gospel: Memorial of St. Augustine - Matthew 25:14-30

Christ’s parable of the talents is familiar to most Christians. Each of three servants are given a different amount of money (or talents) based on his unique giftedness (think ability). The two servants who were given the most money doubled their funds while the less able servant took no initiative (or risk) and buried his money in the ground.

When the master returns, he rewards the two servants who invested well and made money for the master. While the master punishes the servant severely who was afraid to do anything with his money other than bury it in the ground and play it safe—no risk, no gain.

Then the servant who had been given the greatest ability and money was given even more money. Jesus ends by saying, “For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

This parable resonates, perhaps somewhat painfully, with our lives. We know that life is not fair. Why does this innocent one suffer, and another reap rewards at every turn? We think this way because we don’t have the mind of God or His infinite time horizon.

This Gospel demonstrates that no matter what gifts we have, even if it is only the air we breathe, God has very high expectations for us. Fear of using our gifts is no pass from divine accountability. This is not because God is a cruel and demanding master but rather because He is because he is extravagantly generous and understands the great value of His invitation to the Kingdom of God.

Let us not compare ourselves to others, but rather delight in what gifts God has given us!

Ponder:

Do I have gifts that I’ve buried out of fear of failure? How can I use them for the glory of God and His Kingdom?

Pray:

Lord, preserve me from comparing myself to others in a way that reeks of envy. May gratitude pervade my heart and overflow in all that I do with the gift you have entrusted to me.
