Today's Gospel: Luke 4:16-30

In my fourth grade religion class, I asked the teacher all kinds of questions about why Jesus didn’t tell people things I thought He should have, like “Why didn’t Jesus tell everyone that the Americas existed, since He knew that?” Her response was, “Yes, Jesus certainly knew that, but that wasn’t why He was here on earth.”

The people of Nazareth also have some ideas about what they think Jesus should do. They have heard about His wisdom and the miracles He has performed, so perhaps they expect Him to do even more for them as a proverbial “local boy who makes good.” Or perhaps they want Jesus to prove Himself, since, from their perspective, He is just one of them.

Jesus’s mission, however, was not to prove Himself to His hometown or to put on a show. He came to bring people to God, including the Gentiles.

Like the people of Nazareth, we may find ourselves disappointed when God does not meet our expectations for what He should do. We must remember that God has a plan, even if we don’t understand or like it. If not, we could find ourselves pushing God out of our lives, as the people of Nazareth did.

Ponder:

How do I respond when God doesn't meet the expectations I have for what should happen?

Pray:

Lord, let me remember that You have a plan and that You see things much more clearly than I do.
