Today's Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23

"Who do you say that I am?" It's a familiar question, and an important one. In today's Gospel we hear Peter respond to Jesus' question with great faith and confidence. And Jesus gives him the keys of the kingdom.

But the part that was less familiar, for me at least, was the part that came later, when Peter, after having shown such great faith just before, couldn't accept that the Savior would have to suffer. And Jesus calls him an obstacle.

What strikes me about this passage is that Peter is so very human. In one moment he shows great faith, and in the next moment he questions Jesus. It's so very like...me. And yet, his moments of weaker faith do not undo his great faith. Jesus corrects him; Peter receives Jesus' correction, and then moves forward, loving better, with stronger faith.

I want to respond to Jesus in the same way: with love, with conviction, and with humility to receive correction, to admit that I don't understand it all, and to keep moving forward in faith.

Ponder:

If Jesus asked you this question, "Who do you say that I am?" how would you respond?

Pray:

Jesus, I don't always know Who You are, but I want to know. Help my faith.
