Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

Today’s Gospel tells of the genealogy of Jesus on the line of Joseph, his foster father. It is through this line that Jesus is descended from David and Abraham, facts that were very important to the Jewish people for whom Matthew was writing. It offered one proof that Jesus was the Messiah promised in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Have you ever traced your genealogy? It is amazing to learn about the people who came before you. Each one of us comes from a line of people that goes back to the beginning of humanity. Change any one of those people and our genetic material is no longer the same. We no longer exist.

Each of our ancestors also had a role in shaping the circumstances under which we were born and grew up. For those of us who have children, we are part of a genealogical chain that continues. Just as we were shaped by those who came before, we are helping to shape the future.

Each one of the people in Jesus’ genealogy had a role in shaping Joseph, who in turn had the awesome responsibility of being an earthly father to Jesus. May we also take a moment to appreciate our own ancestors and to reflect on our responsibility to future generations.

Ponder:

Spend some time thinking about the ancestors you remember (parents, grandparents, etc.) What is something you would like to thank them for?

Pray:

Dear God, thank You for all of my ancestors who have had a role in shaping who I am. May those who have died have eternal rest with You in heaven.
