Today's Gospel: Luke 17:26-37

Momento mori. Remember death. I don’t enjoy thinking about my own personal death or the end of the world. I imagine I’m not alone in that regard, but this Gospel calls us to contemplate those realities.

We were not made for this world, and while it is all we know, the day will come when we are taken from it. Whether we die a peaceful death in our bed, in a tragic accident, due to a natural disaster, or at the end of the world, the result is the same. We do not know the day nor the hour of our time on this earth; we must always be ready.

In the meantime, like the people in the days of Noah and Lot, we must keep living. Eating, drinking, planting, building, marrying, and raising our families are all part of life here on earth, and they are good things. But as good as they are, they are also temporary. Misfortune and/or death can separate us from them in an instant. As a result, God calls us to cultivate a spirit of detachment. God has given us all our blessings and God can take them from us. Regardless of what happens, we should still trust in God and give thanks to Him, something that I acknowledge is much easier said than done when we are grieving our losses.

Death is coming for us all. Keep your eyes on God rather than on the things of this world, and move forward in faith.

Ponder:

What in life do you hold on to too tightly? How can you keep your primary focus on God?

Pray:

Lord, You give me every good person and thing in my life. Help me to cultivate a spirit of detachment and to always be ready for death.
