Today's Gospel: Feast of St. John - John 20:1a and 2-8

Love is the central message of the gospel, and we are constantly called to deepen our love for Jesus and our faithfulness to the gospel message. Today the Church honors St. John the Apostle, the one who was known as “the Beloved Disciple.” John was the disciple who was best known for his love and loyalty to Jesus. John’s love for Jesus is evident throughout the gospels, most notably at the Crucifixion, as he was the only disciple to remain at the Cross with Jesus and His Mother throughout his suffering and death. His faithfulness and loyalty are demonstrated again in today’s gospel account, as he, along with Peter, are the first two to arrive at the empty tomb and the first to believe in his Resurrection.

The gospel reading presents John as one of the first-hand witnesses to the scene of the empty tomb. In their excitement, he and Peter don’t walk, but run, toward the tomb after being informed by Mary Magdalen that he had risen. After observing the burial cloths rolled up and placed neatly in the tomb, they realize that it is true. They see and believe.

In our own lives, we must believe in the words and works of Jesus and respond with the same urgency and excitement that John and Peter had as they ran toward the empty tomb. How often we are distracted by the passing pleasures and activities of the world, when Jesus is calling us to a higher existence. Following the example of John, we should focus our attention on the Lord and put Him first before all other things in our lives.

Ponder:

What is keeping me today from loving Jesus above all other things in my life?

Pray:

Jesus, as the disciples ran toward the empty tomb after Your Resurrection, please help me to run to You for all of my needs and desires. Teach me to love You like Your Beloved Disciple John did and to follow you more closely every day.
