Today's Gospel: Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul - Mark 16:15-18

On this the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul we are told of Jesus’ direction, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” This is exactly what Saint Paul did. The zealousness with which he had once persecuted Christ in the persons of the early Christians, was now applied to fervent efforts to preach the Good News. Just as Paul was instructed, we too must “go out to all the world and tell the Good News.”

We are reminded in today’s Gospel that salvation comes from Baptism and that “signs will accompany those who believe.” Demons will be driven out. “They will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

New languages were given at Pentecost and the gift of tongues is referenced in early church worship. Demons are driven out through the Church’s ministry of major exorcisms, and we too take part in minor exorcisms when we pray with others against the power of evil in our lives. There is healing power in the Anointing of the Sick as well as in our prayers.

They will pick up serpents and drink deadly things without harm? Surely this is a reference to the power of God and His protection in whatever we do for the kingdom. Have you ever publicly proclaimed the truth by your presence at say, a pro-life demonstration while opponents screamed at you? Or responded to falsehoods about the Lord on social media and then received an irrational response of swear words? In these days of toxic discourse there can be many opportunities to remember the Lord’s promise of protection. We must have courage.

Ponder:

How can I pray and act in expectant hope that the Lord can and does perform miracles and signs even today?

Pray:

O Lord, please give me the courage of Saint Paul to proclaim the Gospel, knowing that Your grace and protection are always upon me.
