Today's Gospel: Mark 4:1-20
When I was a child, I loved story time. It was my favorite time of day at school, and at home – well, I’m sure I exhausted my mother with constant requests for my favorite stories.
The set-up in today’s scripture, with Jesus teaching a crowd so large He spoke to them from a boat, appeals to that eager child inside me. I’m transported to the scene and think I might have been one of those people in the crowd pushing to get closer so I could hear every word.
How would I have received Jesus’s teaching?
Regrettably, I’ve been like each of the descriptions of the soil in the parable of the sower. There have been times when Jesus spoke to deaf ears, and the seeds of His message failed to even land near me. Other times, His message sounded good to me but I either lacked understanding or commitment, and let the world distract me again.
I’d like to think that I’ve matured now, and that over time I have tended to my heart like a field ready to receive the seeds of faith so those seeds will take deep roots. I can’t take it for granted, though. Just as it is a commitment to tend a field, nurture the plants, and care for the soil to make sure it is fertile, so, too, must I tend to my faith, to be ready to receive the Good News.
Ponder:
How do you receive the Good News?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, I am like a child sitting at Your feet, ready to hear Your words for me. Amen.
