Today's Gospel: Luke 21:29-33

I always laugh at the cartoons that show a bearded, long-haired man wearing a sandwich board that declares, “The end is nigh!” It seems like our culture is fascinated, in a grim way, with the end of the world, whether it was going to happened at the turn of the century or according to ancient calendars. It never comes, of course, and then there is a next big warning.

Nevertheless, the readings before this Lesson of the Fig Tree can be frightening. Jesus is talking to his disciples about the events that lead up to the end. In this Gospel reading, he mentions the signs that will come first. Storms. Plagues. Unrest.

It hits much too close to home given the events of the last year!

There was a time when I would have been scared. To be sure, we do not know when the end will come, and so, it is wise to take these words to heart and be ready. Staying close to the Sacraments, especially reconciliation, is wise preparation.

But let’s consider how Jesus speaks to us in this passage. He acknowledges how all these terrible things will pass. Then, He gives us the truth that consoles: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

We may live in uncertain times, but there is one who is constant and true. Let us put our faith and hope in the Lord!

Ponder:

Do you find yourself consumed with the signs and miss the mark on what's real?

Pray:

Lord, give me the grace to grow in faith and hope.

We may live in uncertain times, but there is one who is constant and true. Let us put our faith and hope in the Lord! #dailygospel
