Today's Gospel: Matthew 8:18-22

When I read verse 20, I want to say to Our Lord, “You are welcome to come and stay at our home. I am not sure if I could manage your whole retinue, but I think we could make You and a few of your disciples comfortable for as long as You wished to stay.”

Included in that invitation would be the understanding that He could rest. We would not pester Him with questions, although we would love to do so. We would be completely at His service. His room would be clean, comfortable, and simple. The windows would let in the natural light, but the blinds could be shut allowing Him to rest. It would be quiet and peaceful.

The meals would be nourishing and follow His Middle Eastern diet. We would recline at table if He so wished, sharing the meal out of common pots, dipping the bread in the sauces, and scooping out the vegetable and meat bits with the crusts. We would drink wine.

I am sure He would welcome a hot shower to wash the dust of the day off and soothe his aching muscles after the long extend days of walking and preaching. Showers are something we could offer Him every day.

A place to lay His head, food to eat, water to wash, quiet for rest and prayer, all these things I would like to offer the Lord. Come and stay as long as You wish. Our home is here for You.

Ponder:

How can I welcome the Lord today in 2021 so that He has a place to lay His head?

Pray:

Lord, help me to be more generous, seeing in the needy who come across my path an opportunity to welcome You.
