Today's Gospel: Mark 12:28-34

As I began writing this reflection in August 2020, I realized it was on this date, March 12, 2020, that I began to “stay in place” due to the pandemic. What a shocking transition from an active life to being sequestered without family, friends, church family, or the Eucharist. It was like being in exile in a foreign land.

And yet, as is proclaimed in this Gospel, the Great Commandment, we have a compass to guide us. As I look back, I only had to look out our front door to see our “literal” neighbors and it provided strength for the journey. Most significantly, we are neighbors in prayer as we pray for one another through the joys and sorrows of life at a neighbor’s Bible Study creating a bond of the love of the Lord. There was constancy as I looked out the front door gazing from house to house on our little cul-de-sac. The simple act of watching our neighbor walk his dogs or another neighbor setting out the trash spoke of the ordinary of daily life.

Then one chilly day in April filled with blue skies and puffy clouds there was a gift. It was the shared celebration of our neighbor’s 87th birthday. We physically distanced gathering outside with masks and birthday signs. What a huge smile was seen when Charlie came outside hearing shouts of “Happy Birthday”! Although there was no cake or hugs, there was an amazing violin concerto by their talented daughter-in-law. As the music faded away, there was shared laughter as she began to play the US Navy Song for this Navy Veteran. In that moment, love of neighbors provided strength for the questions and unknown journey ahead. Isn’t that what loving God truly is?

Ponder:

How do you love God by the love you show your neighbors near and far?

Pray:

Dear Lord, thank You for the power of Your Word that guides us and strengthens us through the unknown as we demonstrate our love for You to those around us. Amen.
