Today's Gospel: John 8:31-42
Jesus offers us freedom! Jesus is not talking about freedom from physical slavery, as the Jews who were listening mistakenly believed. We can see that they thought this because they said that they had never been slaves, which is not true. The Jews been enslaved many times in their history.
However, Jesus was not talking about that kind of slavery; He was talking about slavery to sin. In our society today, Jesus’s kind of freedom, the freedom of truth and love, is needed more than ever. The “freedoms” people want today such as freedom to have an abortion, the freedom to “marry” anyone they choose, the freedom to steal or destroy other people's property, and livelihood in the name of justice, etc. are an illusion. These “freedoms” are actually just the opposite of free; these make us slaves to sin.
People have to work hard for these so-called freedoms. True freedom for mankind happens when we make room for Jesus Christ in our hearts and lives. Unless we become true disciples of Christ, that is uphold His truth and act out His love, we will never experience true freedom. The good news is that He offers it to us freely. All we have to do is say "yes" to Him.
Ponder:
Am I ready to give up my own will and its slavery to sin to embrace true freedom in Christ?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, help me to follow You with all my heart, mind, and will. Help me to obtain true freedom in You. Amen.
