Reflection by Cathy G. Knipper

Today's Gospel: John 15:9-17

This I command you: love one another.

It sounds so simple. Just love. So why is it so very hard? As I write this, we are in the middle of one of the most contentious times in modern history. People are divided on so many issues and subjects, it is difficult and at times, almost impossible to love our fellow man. In my own extended family, relationships are fractured.

It makes me sad. But then I remember where the source of love is and who is our comfort and our hope. So I go to Jesus, because he calls us friends and in his great love he laid down his life for his friends. He showed us what it means to show real love and forgiveness.

I bring myself more frequently to Reconciliation, because even when I know what causes the divisions that exist in our world right now, I must acknowledge my part in them. I do not want to work for the other side. Love is neither a political party nor an election. Love does not have a color and does not show injustice. Love does not kill or harm. Love gives life. Love fulfills. Love bears everlasting fruit.

So I chose the side of love. I pray for those who persecute myself or others. I pray there will be forgiveness and healing of our physical and spiritual selves and of all that divides us. I pray for peace and healing. Most of all I pray that we will learn to love one another in this life, so that we may love one another in the next.

Ponder:

Lord, where do I refuse to love?

Pray:

Lord, help me to love as you commanded your friends. Help me to bear the everlasting fruit of your love.
