Today's Gospel: Mark 10:46-52

“Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.”

This guy is amazing. First, Bartimaeus knows his situation is impossible. Cures for blindness were not exactly abounding in those days. But that does not shut him down. He cries out anyway. Next, he runs into opposition. “Many” in the crowd try to silence him. That doesn’t stop him either. He keeps “calling out all the more.” He persists. And finally, Bartimaeus follows through. He is direct. He holds nothing back, telling Jesus the desire of his heart: “I want to see.” He’s undaunted by impossibility, undefeated by opposition, and a straight-shooter with Jesus. What about me?

Too often I allow spiritual blindness to derail me. It erodes my faith, convincing me that my issues are impossible for God. It drains away my resolve, urging me to give up when the going is rough. And, spiritual blindness incites fear that causes me to avoid the risk of placing my heart’s desires into the Lord’s hands.

How I need the example of Bartimaeus. Although physically blind, he possesses the 20/20 spiritual vision of faith. He sees that Jesus can transform his “impossibility.” He persistently keeps his focus on Jesus, even when hostile voices oppose him. He does not capitulate to fear, but boldly surrenders the desire of his heart into Jesus’ hands.

Ponder:

What form of spiritual blindness is keeping me from the life Jesus wants for me today?

Pray:

Jesus, I ask you to replace my spiritual blindness (name it) with the clear vision of faith.
