Today's Gospel: Luke 18:1-8

Have you ever listened to a person say they stopped believing in God when He failed to answer their prayers? Perhaps you, too, have even struggled with doubt and skepticism in a loving God when He didn’t answer your own prayers in a timely manner, in the way you envisioned.

In today’s Gospel, however, we see the reward of the faithfulness of a widow – a woman who had no claim to any rights in her time. Yet her persistence wore down the unjust judge, who remarked, “because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision.” The unjust judge was worn down by the tenacity of the widow.

God reveals His love for us in this passage, reminding us that, unlike the judge in this parable, God is a just judge. He will answer those who call out to Him day and night.

Perhaps the most uncomfortable passage of today’s Gospel is the closing question, “But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Too often, when we think our prayers fall on deaf ears, when we think God is not just, and when we are angry with how the answer to our prayers unfold, we find ourselves not praying. We stop imploring, and we cease calling out to Him. We slowly start to drift from Him, as we search to answer our own prayers in the manner we determine best.

Which leads us back to the very opening part of the today’s Gospel, “Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.”

Today, have courage to be like the widow. Our just Judge will answer our prayers as we call on Him day and night.

Ponder:

How can you find inspiration in the widow’s role as you petition God in your own prayers?

Pray:

Lord, thank You for the answered prayers in my life. Grant me the wisdom to seek Your will in all instances, without growing weary.
