Today's Gospel: Luke 21:5-11 - Memorial of Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions
In today’s gospel, Jesus responds to comments and answers questions about the temple, the home of Jewish worship. Jesus warns His listeners that all the costly decorations and offerings will not stop the downfall of this structure. He also says that terrifying things will happen—they must happen—and that false comfort will come from deceptive corners.
I wonder how much these verses were in the minds and hearts of Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and all the martyrs of Vietnam, whose feast we celebrate today. They suffered through brutal persecution, torture well beyond quick martyrdom, all in the name of a movement of Nationalism, designed to keep people out. Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and companions give witness to Jesus’ words in today’s scripture. They show us that earthly structures are guaranteed to crumble, but God’s love in truth remains solid. God’s love continues to be worth more than any earthly comfort.
Ponder:
Where are some areas in your life where you may be relying too much on earthly structures for your security? Is it a political party? A volunteer group? Unhealthy relationships? How can you choose to honor God in truth today?
Pray:
Father, through the intercession of Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and all the martyrs of Vietnam, help us to promote Your honor above all earthly goods in all that we think, do, and say.
