Today's Gospel: Luke 13:18-21

My sister and I have discussed many times how growing up in faith formation classes in the 80’s, we only learned one thing: that God loves us. There were no youth groups and we didn’t learn the catechism, theology, or the tenets of the faith in our classes. We just learned the one thing – God loves me. Honestly, we felt shortchanged, like we’d missed out on learning about the beauty and mystery of our Catholic faith when we were young.

As an adult, I took it upon myself to rectify this absence of learning “real substance” as I perceived it. I attended Bible studies, learned about the Saints, participated in retreats, voraciously consumed Catholic books, and taught elementary faith formation. The more I learned and experienced as a faithful Catholic, the more excited I became about my faith.

Then one day, while reflecting on this Gospel, it dawned on me. That one thing I learned in faith formation classes was a mustard seed. Knowing and understanding that God loves me, always and forever, was the seed that was planted for me to continue to grow and love Christ. Maybe my hunger for learning about our faith wasn’t because of my lack of learning, but maybe it was because of what I learned while I was young.

Knowing that God loves me deep down in my core granted me a confidence in His love to continually seek to know Him. Now, I strive to teach my own children that God loves them, always and forever. I desire for that mustard seed to take root in them so it may grow and flourish throughout their lives.

Ponder:

What seed might have been planted in you to help you grow in faith and love?

Pray:

Lord, help me to continue to grow and flourish in faith and allow me to plant the seed of faith in my children.
