Today's Gospel: John 1:19-28

The television show The Voice is still quite popular after more than twenty seasons. Contestants from all around sing with all their heart, hoping to convince an established artist to mentor them. Competing against others who have also been chosen, they hope to win over the audience and be chosen as the favored one that wins a recording contract.

The ultimate winner of The Voice, however, was chosen over 2,000 years ago – St. John the Baptist. Mentored by the Spirit, chosen by God Himself, John sung out about the Savior Son. It did not matter to him if the “experts” liked him, though he was a favorite of the populace. John had a mission.

He was “the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’”

St. John the Baptist spoke the Truth, no matter the cost; and ultimately, it cost him everything. Two thousand years later, that same conviction and courage is required of us. We need to be voices crying out in what may feel like a wilderness where no one is listening. Still, we must speak the Truth.

In a world that is confused, doesn’t want to hear the truth, doesn’t even want to admit that there is Truth, we must cry out, “Prepare the way of the Lord.”

Now, before you grab your camel hair shirt and brown lunch bag of locusts, think about this. God called St. John the Baptist to be a fiery, AC/DC “Highway to Hell” kind of guy. That probably is not the kind of voice, though, that God has given you. Our lyrics can still be forceful yet kind. So, speak truth with love and of love with truth.

Ponder:

Who do you know who needs to hear the truth?

Pray:

Father, through the intercession of St. John of Baptist, help me to use my voice to build up Your Kingdom. Holy Spirit, grant me wisdom and courage.
