Reflect on St. André Bessette's humble life and deep faith, drawing inspiration from his devotion to St. Joseph and his compassionate ministry to the suffering.
Today's Gospel: Mark 6:34-44
St. André Bessette was born in Quebec to a family of little means. Frail, sickly, and orphaned at a young age, his life began with hardship. Despite poor health and limited education, the archbishop recognized his deep faith and endorsed his entrance into the Congregation of Holy Cross. There, André served humbly as a porter—a doorman—at a high school in Montreal.
Though his task seemed simple, his heart for God transformed it into a ministry. For the ill and suffering, Brother André consistently recommended devotion to St. Joseph. At a small wooden chapel dedicated to St. Joseph, where André also served, people sought his prayers. Many who visited experienced healing, some as miraculous as the multiplication of loaves and fishes in the Gospel. Brother André, however, never claimed credit. In profound humility, he attributed every healing to the intercession of St. Joseph.
André’s humility and compassion became the foundation of his sanctity. He shared a heart like Jesus—moved by pity for those who suffered, attentive to their stories, and generous with his prayers. Over time, he became affectionately known as the “Miracle Man of Montreal.” Yet, to the end of his life, André remained a simple servant, seeing himself only as an instrument of God’s grace.
The witness of St. André Bessette reminds us that Jesus’ healing and providential love are not confined to the pages of the Gospels. Just as He reached out with compassion to the sick and struggling two thousand years ago, His heart still moves to pity today. Through the faith of the saints, we glimpse the miraculous ways God continues to touch His people.
