Today's Gospel: John 1:29-34

Behold. This is a word that is meant to stop us in our tracks. A word that invites us to give all our attention, all our senses to that which we see. A word that says, “You don’t want to miss this.”

Behold, the Lamb of God.

John was waiting for this moment. He knew to expect it, had been preaching that a man would come who ranks ahead of him, and here He is. Behold. I can hear the wonder in his voice as he looks upon Jesus, the reverence that the mystery of God is unfolding right here before him. The marvel at his own small part in the arc of redemption, that his unique purpose in the plan of God was to make a way for this moment, for this Man. To make Him known.

I pause in this sacred, ordinary scene. The Gospel tells us only that John was there in Bethany and that Jesus came toward him. The first disciples come later, but for now we have only two men, two cousins coming face to face, a prophet and the Son of God. John’s whole purpose is for this moment: to make Him known. And here He is. Behold.

You have chosen me to play a part in the arc of your redemption. You come toward me and call forth from me my truest purpose. Like John, I am to make You known. Fill me with wonder, awe, and courage to proclaim You as the Lamb of God, the Son of God in all I do and say. May I see and testify to Your presence and peace in my life.

Ponder:

How am I fulfilling the role that the Lord has for me in helping others to behold Jesus as the Lamb of God?

Pray:

Oh, Jesus, teach me to behold You in the ordinary, miraculous events of my life. Give me the grace to spend all of my life making You known.
