Today's Gospel: John 10:1-10

We are all looking for a sheepfold. A sanctuary, a place of rest, a place where we belong and will be protected. How carefully do we consider the places we go for belonging and safety? Jesus frequently used sheep metaphors because they were familiar to the people of His day and age. But where is my sheepfold? Where do I turn at the end of the day or the end of my rope when I need comfort, care, and belonging? Do I recognize the thieves and robbers in my life that lead me away from the pasture I seek and offer me cheap substitutions? Am I ever the thief, trying to enjoy the gifts of God but climbing into the pasture the way I want?

In the modern era, we are bombarded with invitations to find security and purpose in the world or in ourselves. It is so easy to make feelings, possessions, or our appearance the gatekeeper of our pasture. We rely on ourselves or the opinions of others to determine our worth and provide safety and meaning.

Jesus says, “I am the gate.” Through Him alone we are saved and receive the gift of abundant life. He promises that we belong to Him. He will lead us and hear us, but we must choose His sheepfold. We must honor Him as the way in and out of the pasture. He alone must be the gatekeeper of our heart, and we need no longer listen to the thieves and robbers in our lives, or on our phones. As we spend time with Jesus through His word and the sacraments, may we no longer respond to the voice of strangers, thieves, and robbers, but only to the voice of our shepherd, the gateway to freedom and abundant life.

Ponder:

Do I recognize the thieves and robbers in my life that lead me away from the pasture I seek and offer me cheap substitutions?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, help me to come away with You so that I can learn to recognize Your voice. You desire my heart and to bring me eternal comfort, safety, and belonging. I trust in You.
