Today's Gospel: John 2:1-11
I have always found it interesting that Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine. Of all the things He could do, why did He decide to do this as the first sign that would reveal His glory? Season 1, Episode 5 of The Chosen outlined the importance of the wine served at a wedding for social status. The episode depicted the situation as follows: Mary, Jesus’ mother, was a friend of the family hosting the wedding and was acutely aware of Jewish customs that would have deemed negative social judgment against the family for running out of wine.
Like any child who honors his mother by doing what she asks of them, Jesus exhibits His humanness by answering Mary's request. This also foreshadows Him at the Last Supper, turning the wine into His Blood to be consumed at every Mass celebration.
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:27-28)
This belief remains a mystical element that the faithful struggle to embrace fully. My husband would marvel at me consuming the blood of Christ from the same chalice as so many others without fear of germs. I would say to him often, “That is the Lord I am receiving, and He will protect me.”
Ponder:
When we receive Communion, Jesus is in us. Do you believe this? Be mindful of how you live and model Christ with Him in your body after Communion.
Pray:
Jesus, give me the desire to need the Body and Blood of Christ more than just on Sunday.
